INEOS Energy and partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden have started commercial operations at Project Greensand, described as the EU's first full-scale offshore CO2 storage site. Captured CO2, mostly from Danish biomethane plants, is liquefied, trucked to Port Esbjerg, shipped on the carrier Carbon Destroyer 1, and injected into the Nini West reservoir, a depleted oil field about 250 km offshore. The initial phase can store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, with plans to scale to 4 to 8 million tonnes per year as demand grows. The milestone comes as the EU targets 50 million tonnes per year of carbon capture and storage by 2030 and 250 to 280 million tonnes by 2040. Project Greensand shows the full CCS chain in operation, but the gap between current capacity and policy targets remains very wide. The article is worth reading for anyone tracking whether CCS projects can move from pilot scale to real deployment.
