INEOS has opened Greensand, the first full-scale carbon dioxide storage site in the European Union. Located at the Port of Esbjerg, the project captures CO2 from Danish biomethane plants, liquefies it, ships it on the purpose-built carrier Carbon Destroyer 1, and injects it into the Nini West depleted oil field 250 kilometers offshore and 1,800 meters beneath the seabed. The initial capacity is 400,000 tonnes per year, with plans to expand to 4-8 million tonnes annually. The opening marks a shift from pilot projects to commercial operation. The source from biomethane means the CO2 is biogenic, potentially enabling negative emissions. The project is led by INEOS Energy with partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden. The main challenge now is creating the regulatory and economic conditions to scale up carbon capture across Europe, as the chairman noted. This is a significant step for CCS deployment in the EU.
