INEOS has started operations at the Greensand project in the Danish North Sea, the EU's first full-scale carbon storage facility. The initial phase can store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, with plans to expand to 4-8 million tonnes annually. Captured CO2 from Danish biomethane plants is liquefied, trucked to Esbjerg, and shipped to the depleted Nini West oil field for injection 1,800 meters below the seabed. Injection depth and well integrity matter more than the headline capacity. 400k tonnes is small, but scaling to 8Mt is ambitious. Anyone know the actual injection rate per well?

The EU needs a clear accounting framework for stored CO2. How are credits counted if the biomethane is used for energy? Also, the truck transport leg adds cost and emissions.

Good to see first full-scale project, but 400k tonnes is a drop in the bucket. The real test is whether they can scale and keep costs down. Also, biomethane CO2 is biogenic, so net removal depends on the accounting.

This is a start, but we need dozens of these to matter. The logistics of trucking CO2 to port and shipping seems inefficient. Pipeline would be better but costly to build.
