Indonesia shifts from timber to multi-enterprise forestry for carbon trading and bioeconomy
en.antaranews.comIndonesia's Forestry Ministry announced a policy shift from conventional timber production to a Multi-Enterprise Forestry (MUK) scheme. The move aims to boost the green bioeconomy by expanding into silvopasture, biomass energy, and water utilization. Timber production has become commercially unviable due to rising operational costs exceeding market prices, according to the ministry's Director of Forest Utilization Business Development Ilham. The government is targeting carbon sequestration and trading as a major economic driver. Restoring 12 million hectares of land could store up to 13.4 billion tons of carbon, valued at roughly US$130 billion at US$10 per ton. A cross-ministerial zoning framework has been finalized to provide legal certainty for investors, with permits issued by the Forestry Ministry for state forest zones, the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs for other use areas, and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs for coastal zones.
