Indonesia's State Railway Adds 113 Solar Plants to Cut Emissions and Power Stations
streamlinefeed.co.kePT Kereta Api Indonesia has switched on 113 solar power plants across 92 stations and maintenance depots, adding 4,430.65 kWp of rooftop solar capacity. The railway expects the systems to generate about 6.6 million kWh per year for lighting, signaling, and administrative buildings, while cutting an estimated 5,800 tons of CO2 annually. The move builds on a 15.39 percent energy consumption reduction the operator reported for 2025 through fleet upgrades, LED retrofits, and scheduling changes. The installations are mostly grid-tied or hybrid systems, letting KAI offset daytime peak load and draw from the national grid at night or during heavy cloud. Indonesia's net-metering rules may also credit excess daytime generation against future consumption, which helps the business case. The project gives other state-owned infrastructure operators a concrete example of using unused rooftop space to lock in low-cost, zero-fuel power for decades.
