Indonesia's Climate Justice Law Aims to Share Carbon Market Revenue with Local Communities

Indonesia's Ministry of Environment is preparing a Climate Justice Law to ensure that carbon trading benefits reach indigenous peoples, local communities, and villages that protect forests and ecosystems. Environment Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat stated the regulation aims to fix the perception that carbon markets only benefit businesses and rent seekers. The law would prioritize communities that contribute to climate protection and ecosystem maintenance. The government argues that stronger recognition and protection of local communities will also increase the value of Indonesian carbon credits in international markets. Indonesia holds a strategic position in global carbon markets due to its vast forests and rich biodiversity. The proposed law seeks to balance the role of businesses and traders with fair distribution of economic gains to those who generate environmental benefits through nature protection.
