Indonesia's Carbon Value Potential Put at $200 Billion, Minister Pushes Verified Methane Credits
voi.idIndonesia's Environment Minister Jumhur Hidayat said the country's carbon economic value potential could reach $200 billion, roughly IDR 4,500 trillion. He framed carbon trading as part of a shift from extraction to restoration, and stressed that revenue should reach local communities, not just paper traders. The concrete example in the announcement is landfill methane. Closing open dumping sites, capturing methane, and using it for energy would cut emissions and create credits with verifiable impact. Methane is roughly 30 times stronger than CO2 over its first decades, so those reductions carry weight in international markets. The minister also ordered a 'Smart Carbon Book' to explain registration and carbon terms at village level. The size of the potential number will depend on whether Indonesia can move from stated ambition to registered, verified projects.
