Indonesia plans to lead global forest climate action with carbon credits and conservation financing

Indonesia's Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni announced the country aims to lead global forest-based climate solutions. Key initiatives include expanding high-integrity carbon markets, issuing over 30 million tonnes of CO2e in forestry carbon credits starting July 2026, and introducing innovative conservation financing for national parks. The government has reduced wildfire area from 2.61 million hectares in 2015 to about 359,000 hectares in 2025. The Social Forestry program now covers over 8.3 million hectares benefiting 1.4 million families. New regulations under Presidential Regulation 110 of 2025 and Ministerial Regulations provide a framework for forestry carbon activities. Indonesia is also establishing a National Park Innovative Financing Task Force to develop carbon financing, biodiversity credits, and blended finance for 57 national parks. The minister highlighted potential cooperation with the UK on sustainable finance and market infrastructure.
