Indonesia is exploring carbon incentives for ports that adopt green and smart port practices under its Carbon Economic Value (NEK) scheme. The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs says the move could reward emission reductions in the port sector, similar to existing green building incentives. However, the government is still developing a Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) methodology before any payments begin. The Green and Smart Port program, running since 2019, assessed 41 ports by 2025. Eight ports are set to receive certification in July 2026. The assessment weighs environmental performance at 80 percent, covering waste management, renewable energy use, mangrove restoration, and carbon cuts. Technology and digitalization make up the remaining 20 percent. State-owned IDSurvey supports certification and verification for the transition.
