Indonesia launches 20-year blue carbon roadmap to cut emissions and fund coastal protection
en.antaranews.comIndonesia has launched a 2026-2045 Blue Carbon Ecosystem Protection and Management Roadmap, moving its climate strategy beyond land-based projects to include oceans. The plan covers 3.45 million hectares of mangroves and 660,000 hectares of seagrass, which together can store up to 3.4 gigatons of carbon. The government says the roadmap will strengthen coastal resilience and fishery productivity while opening up new financing channels. The roadmap includes four directives: cross-sector policy integration, a single-window data system with international-standard MRV, innovative financing, and inclusive benefits for coastal communities. It was developed with the Indonesia Climate Change Trust Fund and support from AFD and WRI Indonesia. The long-term vision is to make blue carbon a core part of Indonesia's climate commitments, but the actual impact will depend on whether the MRV framework and financing instruments are built to international standards.
