Indonesia halts forest clearing for rice paddies after reaching rice self-sufficiency
straitstimes.comIndonesia says it will stop clearing forests for new rice paddies, after reporting that domestic production now meets demand. The government had launched a program in 2024 to open three million hectares for rice cultivation, part of an effort to end rice imports within five years. On October 6, climate envoy Hashim Djojohadikusumo said the strategic rice reserve had reached about 5.3 million tonnes and that there was no further need to expand rice areas into forest. The move matters for Indonesia's goal to be a net carbon sink by 2030, since forests absorb more carbon than the country emits. But the announcement does not say how much forest was already cleared before the halt. With El Nino-driven wildfires and haze affecting neighbors, the enforcement of this halt and the fate of peatlands will determine whether the policy actually protects carbon stocks and air quality.
