Indonesia exceeds ozone and HFC phaseout targets at MOP38, sets 2029 HFC reduction goal
en.antaranews.comIndonesia reported it exceeded the Montreal Protocol target for phasing out HCFCs, reaching a 72.66 percent reduction by 2025. The announcement came at MOP38 in Kigali, where the country also outlined next steps on HFCs, which have a much higher global warming potential. Indonesia plans to cut HFC consumption by at least 10 percent from baseline starting January 1, 2029, equal to about 2.3 million tons of CO2e. The progress is backed by enforcement and workforce training, including 945 customs officers and more than 4,300 refrigeration technicians certified. Indonesia also secured approval for an energy efficiency project with the Multilateral Fund to help refrigerator manufacturers switch from HFC-134a to R-600a. Industrial HFC emission controls are now included in Indonesia's Second Nationally Determined Contribution from 2031. The country is calling for predictable replenishment of the Multilateral Fund for 2027 to 2029 to keep developing country action on track.
