thestar.com.myIndonesia and Singapore signed a memorandum of understanding on carbon credits at the annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders' Retreat in Jakarta on July 6. The pact aims to identify high-integrity carbon credit projects, share technical expertise on carbon markets, and work toward an implementation agreement under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong said the goal is to channel climate finance into projects that protect forests, restore coastal ecosystems, and deploy clean technology solutions that reduce emissions and create economic opportunities. The agreement was signed by Singapore's Gan Kim Yong and Indonesia's Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat. It covers cooperation on verifying carbon reductions without double counting, a key requirement for compliance with the Paris Agreement. Meizani Irmadhiany of Konservasi Indonesia said the pact will support high-integrity carbon projects that reduce emissions, reverse biodiversity loss, and generate sustainable livelihoods for communities near forests and mangroves. The deal was one of several economic initiatives announced at the annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders' Retreat in Jakarta.
