A comprehensive review of 111 peer reviewed papers shows that lands managed by Indigenous Peoples often outperform government protected areas in carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. In the Brazilian Amazon, native vegetation loss was 17 times lower on Indigenous lands than in similar unprotected areas. These findings highlight the critical role of Indigenous land rights in meeting global 30x30 climate commitments. Despite their effectiveness, 60 percent of these lands remain vulnerable to industrial development and climate change due to a lack of formal legal protection.

That is the tension. We need the minerals for the grid but cannot afford to lose the carbon sinks. If we don't recognize the land rights first, the industrial push will just wipe out the most effective conservation zones we have.
