Researchers from IIT Madras and IISc Bengaluru have synthesized a stable, carbon-free molecule that mimics the structure of ferrocene. By replacing iron and carbon with osmium and boron, the team solved a 70 year old chemistry puzzle regarding the stability of sandwich-like molecular structures. This discovery opens new doors for material science, specifically in the development of advanced semiconductors, industrial catalysts, and next-generation energy storage systems. While the research is currently fundamental, it provides a blueprint for designing robust materials without relying on carbon-based organic chemistry.
