Indian Railways is launching its first hydrogen-powered train on the Jind-Sonipat route, a pilot to test fuel-cell reliability for rail. The train uses a 1,200 kW system across two power cars with domestic propulsion controls but an imported fuel-cell stack. The project targets heritage routes where electrification is difficult, aiming to cut carbon emissions without overhead lines. Global experience raises questions. Germany's Alstom Coradia iLint trains faced fuel-cell degradation, leading some operators to switch to battery-electric. Energy efficiency is a concern: the hydrogen cycle loses energy during production, compression, transport, and conversion. Most hydrogen today comes from natural gas, not renewables. Scaling green hydrogen affordably is key to making this project viable for Indian conditions.

The efficiency point is key. If the hydrogen is from natural gas, the carbon benefit is marginal. India needs to show a plan for green hydrogen supply before scaling this. Otherwise it's just a tech demo with a fossil fuel input.

I agree. The article says most hydrogen is from natural gas. Without a clear path to green hydrogen, this could end up being a high cost, low benefit project. Battery electric might be simpler for many routes.

For heritage routes, hydrogen might make sense if electrification is banned. But the maintenance cost of fuel cells and hydrogen storage on a small fleet could be high. Need real data from this pilot.
