Indian Railways Hydrogen Train Launch: Jind-Sonipat Route, Efficiency, and Green Hydrogen Challenges

The project targets heritage routes where electrification is difficult, aiming to cut carbon emissions without overhead lines. Global experience raises questions. Germany's Alstom Coradia iLint trains faced fuel-cell degradation, leading some operators to switch to battery-electric. Energy efficiency is a concern: the hydrogen cycle loses energy during production, compression, transport, and conversion. Most hydrogen today comes from natural gas, not renewables. Scaling green hydrogen affordably is key to making this project viable for Indian conditions.
