Indian Railways hits 99.6% electrification, ranks second globally after Switzerland
constructionworld.inIndian Railways has electrified 99.6% of its broad gauge network as of July 2026, making it the world's second most electrified large railway system behind Switzerland. The milestone came after electrifying 48,072 route kilometers between 2014 and 2026, a sharp acceleration from the 21,801 km completed in the six decades before 2014. Diesel consumption for traction dropped from 2,930 million liters in 2015-16 to 1,080 million liters in 2024-25, cutting reliance on imported fuel. The railway has also commissioned over 1,260 MW of renewable energy capacity, mostly solar, to power trains and stations. Rail freight emits about 89% less CO2 per tonne-kilometer than road transport, so the shift supports broader decarbonization goals.
