V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tamil Nadu has cut net carbon emissions by 45% and now offsets nearly 94% of its energy consumption through renewables, according to its first Sustainability Report. The port has also been recognized as a Scope-2 Emission Free Port and is developing a green hydrogen pilot project. The port reduced carbon intensity per tonne of cargo by roughly half over four years. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the port as a model for sustainable maritime growth. Other initiatives include an IIM Calcutta case study on the port's green transition and a partnership with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya for logistics research. A PortGPT mobile app was launched to improve operational efficiency with AI. The port's progress shows how infrastructure can combine emissions cuts with digital tools and workforce development.
