Indian Cement Makers Expand Solar and Waste Heat Recovery to Cut Power Costs and Emissions
tradingview.comShree Cement and JK Lakshmi Cement are scaling up renewable energy and waste heat recovery to reduce electricity costs and carbon emissions. JK Lakshmi already meets 47% of its power needs from green sources and plans to exceed 70% by FY30, including a 29 MW solar project with battery storage at Sirohi. Shree Cement raised its green power share to 62.1% in FY2025-26 and avoided about 1.05 million tonnes of CO2, while investing Rs 387.73 crore in energy conservation that delivered Rs 97.41 crore in annual savings. The broader Indian cement industry still relies on renewables for just 4-5% of its electricity mix, though it sees potential to reach 80-85% by 2070. Challenges remain: land availability, intermittent power, high capital costs for waste heat recovery (Rs 10-12 crore per MW vs Rs 4-6 crore for conventional), and weak transmission infrastructure near remote plants. The sector is also pushing for policy certainty, affordable green finance, and better grid access to accelerate the shift.
