India UK trade pact shields 85% of steel exports from UK safeguard measures and carbon tax
rediff.comIndia and the UK have finalized a trade agreement that exempts 85% of India's steel exports from Britain's steel safeguard measures. The deal, effective July 15, uses country-specific quotas and the Authorised Use Scheme to protect Indian steel shipments. This comes as the UK prepares to cut tariff-free steel import quotas by 60% from July 2026 and impose a 50% tariff on excess imports. The UK also plans to launch its Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in 2027, targeting sectors like iron, steel, aluminium, and cement. India's exports worth $775 million could face a carbon tax of 14-24% under this mechanism. India's iron and steel exports to the UK were $893.4 million in 2025-26. The agreement aims to balance trade interests while both countries move toward carbon pricing.
