India Steel Policy 2047: Triple Capacity, Lower Emissions Intensity to 1.54 tCO2 per Tonne
english.revoi.inIndia's draft National Steel Policy, Vision 2047, proposes nearly tripling crude steel capacity to 604 million tonnes by 2047 and lifting finished steel demand to 505 million tonnes. It also targets per capita steel consumption of 302 kg, up from 116 kg now, while reducing dependence on imported coking coal, which currently covers 92 percent of requirements. On the climate side, the policy aims to cut average emissions intensity from 2.54 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel to 1.54 tonnes by 2047. The main levers are better energy efficiency, renewable electricity, more scrap use, and hydrogen-based steelmaking. It also calls for building steel scrap collection and recycling systems and making more steelmaking equipment domestically. Infrastructure and construction drive about 67 percent of Indian steel demand, with autos and engineering goods adding 28 percent. The draft still has to move from paper to implementation, and the hard part will be matching new low-carbon capacity with actual power supply, scrap availability, and financing.
