India has inaugurated the world's first hydrogen production facility that uses nuclear technology at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The facility uses heat from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor to drive a Copper-Chlorine thermochemical cycle developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. This process splits water into hydrogen and oxygen without fossil fuels, producing zero direct emissions. The project is a technology demonstrator aimed at validating nuclear-assisted hydrogen production at scale. Officials say the approach could support large-scale, carbon-free hydrogen output by combining nuclear power's reliable heat and electricity. The Cu-Cl cycle operates at lower temperatures than some alternatives, which may improve efficiency and reduce costs over time. This development opens a new pathway for clean hydrogen that does not rely on electrolysis powered by renewables. If scaled commercially, nuclear hydrogen could serve hard-to-abate sectors like steelmaking, fertilizer production, and heavy transport. The next step will be optimizing the process and building larger pilot plants to test economic viability.
