India says E20 petrol cuts carbon emissions 30% versus E10, no engine damage found in millions of vehicles
thehansindia.comThe Indian government told Parliament that E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol, delivers roughly 30% lower carbon emissions compared to E10 fuel. Officials cited studies from ARAI, SIAM, and Indian Oil showing better acceleration, cleaner combustion, and near-zero particulate matter. They also reported that millions of legacy vehicles not originally certified for E20 have shown no evidence of corrosion, abnormal wear, or reduced component life after extensive field monitoring. A leading car manufacturer serviced 2.84 crore vehicles in FY2025-26, including about 1.5 crore non-E20-certified models, and found no ethanol-related damage. Another OEM tracked 1.4 crore E20-operated vehicles over an extended period with similar results. The government is pushing E20 as a way to reduce oil imports and improve urban air quality, though the rollout depends on ethanol supply and vehicle compatibility across the fleet.
