India's Soil Carbon Payments: 2,550 Farmers in Punjab and Haryana Receive Rs 2.9 Crore for Regenerative Farming
thehansindia.comIndia's agricultural carbon market is moving from policy to practice. The government has started disbursing over Rs 2.9 crore to 2,550 small farmers in Punjab and Haryana for adopting regenerative farming practices like Direct Seeded Rice and reduced tillage. The payments come from carbon credits issued under the Verra VM0042 methodology, covering about 30,000 acres and 50,000 credits. The program, called Aadi, was launched by Grow Indigo with ICAR's technical help. It covers over two million acres and 100,000 farmers across seven states. Farmers receive digital payments, with amounts ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 15,000 each. The initiative also estimates savings of 45 billion litres of water and keeping over 200,000 tonnes of crop residue out of fires, avoiding about 1,000 tonnes of PM2.5 emissions.
