India's power sector emissions have stayed flat for two consecutive years, a first in over 50 years, even as electricity demand grew 7%. Clean energy, led by 77GW of new solar capacity, met all of the demand increase. The analysis from Carbon Brief shows coal generation stagnated while renewables expanded. However, total emissions still rose 3.7% due to steel and cement. Oil and gas use declined. The country faces challenges in grid upgrades, storage buildout, and industrial electrification. Tenders for 272GWh of storage signal progress, but current capacity remains small. The findings highlight that clean power can cover demand growth, but industrial decarbonization and flexibility remain key. With policy support and infrastructure investment, India could sustain this trajectory.
