India's Plastic Waste Hits 4 Million Tonnes a Year, EPR and Traceability Are the Government's Answer
republicworld.comIndia generates 3.5 to 4 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, but only 50-60% is formally collected. With plastic consumption expected to double in the next decade, the government is pushing EPR rules, traceability systems, and recycling technology. The 2022 Plastic Waste Management Rules banned 19 single-use plastic items and made producers responsible for collection and recycling. The recycled plastics market is projected to grow from USD 6.57 billion in 2026 to USD 11.71 billion by 2031. Industry leaders at the Plastics Recycling Show India 2026 said feedstock quality and source segregation remain the biggest hurdles. India's copper scrap already meets 38% of demand, highlighting the broader opportunity for secondary materials to cut import dependence.
