Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India's per capita carbon emissions are less than half the global average, using this to argue that developing countries should not carry the main burden of climate responsibility. According to 2024 data from PRS Legislative Research, India's per capita CO2 emissions were about 2.1 tonnes, compared with 13.4 in the US, 8.9 in China, and 5.4 in the EU. Modi spoke at an international conference on environment and climate dynamics in New Delhi, organized by the National Green Tribunal. The event gathers judges, experts, and officials from 17 countries to discuss climate resilience, circular economy, biodiversity, and sustainable energy. The conference aims to identify gaps in policy implementation and strengthen cooperation between environmental and judicial institutions. India accounts for about 8% of global CO2 emissions, and the country is focused on showing that development and environmental sustainability can coexist. The conference continues with sessions on building a roadmap for future climate and environmental challenges.
