India aims to increase crude steel capacity to 400 million tons by 2036 under the National Steel Policy 2025. To balance this growth with climate goals, the sector is targeting a reduction in emissions intensity from 2.65 to 2 metric tons of CO2 per ton of finished steel. The transition focuses on shifting away from coal toward gas-based steelmaking and increasing the use of scrap for circular production. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to lower the industrial footprint of a sector that currently accounts for 10 to 12 percent of India's total carbon emissions.
