India plans to increase its crude steel capacity to 400 million tonnes by 2035-36 under the proposed National Steel Policy 2025. The strategy involves a massive investment of approximately $183 billion to expand infrastructure and industrial output. To align with net-zero goals for 2070, the policy aims to reduce carbon emissions intensity from 2.65 to 2 metric tons of CO2 per ton of finished steel. The transition focuses on gas-based steelmaking and increased scrap recycling to move away from coal-heavy processes.
