India's green urea initiative: Fertilizer sector targets clean energy transition with green hydrogen and renewable ammonia

India's Department of Fertilizers has issued an Expression of Interest for domestic green urea production. Green urea uses green hydrogen made from renewable energy and CO2 captured from industrial sources, replacing fossil fuel-based hydrogen. The government plans to procure 7.24 lakh metric tonnes of Green Ammonia annually via e-reverse auction under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The initiative aims to cut carbon emissions from the fertilizer sector, reduce fossil fuel imports, and boost renewable energy deployment. A pilot plant at Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh, already produces 150 tonnes per day of green urea. The government has allocated Rs 19,744 crore for renewable infrastructure to support this transition. Stakeholders can submit proposals under various models including greenfield, brownfield, and joint ventures.
