India's First Soil Carbon Payments: 2,550 Farmers in Punjab and Haryana Receive Over ₹2.9 Crore for Regenerative Farming
indianmasterminds.comIndia's first soil carbon payments are now reaching farmers on the ground. Over 2,550 smallholder farmers in Punjab and Haryana are receiving more than ₹2.9 crore through Grow Indigo's Aadi programme, which pays them for adopting regenerative practices like Direct Seeded Rice, reduced tillage, and crop residue management. The payments are tied to independently verified carbon credits issued under the Verra VM0042 methodology, covering around 30,000 acres and over 50,000 credits in the first round. Farmers received between ₹3,000 and ₹15,000 each, with Grow Indigo fronting the digital payments before credits were sold. The programme also claims significant co-benefits, including 45 billion litres of water saved and over 2 lakh tonnes of crop residue kept out of fires, helping reduce farm-fire incidents and air pollution. The initiative links scientific measurement, carbon market finance, and real farmer income, a model that could scale across India's agricultural sector.
