India is building its first port-based e-methanol plant at Kandla in Gujarat, a Rs 2,300 crore project aimed at supplying low-carbon fuel to international shipping. The plant, developed by Deendayal Port Authority and Assam Petro-Chemicals, will produce 150 tonnes per day using renewable power, water, and biogenic CO2. The first 50-tonne-per-day unit is set for completion by January 2027, with the rest expected by March 2027. At a claimed cost of about $750 per tonne, the plant could undercut global e-methanol prices, making green fuel more competitive for the Asia-Europe shipping corridor. The project also aligns with India's net-zero target for 2070 and its push to expand domestic maritime capacity. The $750 per tonne vs $1,300 global rate sounds optimistic. Need to see the renewable power sourcing and electrolyzer costs. Also the two phase timeline of Jan and March 2027 is tight. Where is the green hydrogen coming from? DPA supplying renewable energy and desalinated water, but is there a PPA for that?

Interesting to see a port authority owning 76% of a fuel plant. That changes the incentive structure. But the key is whether the e-methanol will meet EU or IMO sustainability criteria. Biogenic CO2 source matters. Also the cost estimate might not include carbon pricing or subsidy. Worth watching how they certify the carbon intensity.
