India has commissioned what is being called the world's first nuclear heat-based hydrogen production plant in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The plant uses heat from a nuclear reactor to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, bypassing the need for electricity-based electrolysis. This method could lower the carbon footprint of hydrogen production compared to conventional steam methane reforming, which relies on natural gas and emits CO2. The project is part of India's broader push to produce green hydrogen and meet its decarbonization targets. Using nuclear heat rather than renewable electricity for hydrogen production avoids the intermittency issues that come with solar or wind power. The plant's output is expected to be used in industrial processes like fertilizer manufacturing and refining. While the technology is promising, the scale remains small and the economics are unproven. Nuclear hydrogen still faces questions around capital costs, safety, and public acceptance. It will take several years to see if this approach can compete with electrolysis powered by cheap renewables or with natural gas-based hydrogen equipped with carbon capture.
