India's first mobile liquid tree uses microalgae to clean air in cities and industrial zones
bizzbuzz.newsResearchers at CSIR-CIMFR in Dhanbad have developed India's first mobile Smart Algal Liquid Tree (SALT), a compact air purification system that uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The unit is designed for polluted urban areas where planting conventional trees is not feasible. It houses microalgae in water inside an enclosed unit, continuously capturing CO2 through photosynthesis. The system also reduces dust, operates on solar or grid power, and includes sensors for air quality, CO2 levels, temperature, humidity, and particulate matter. It doubles as a public amenity with shaded seating and charging ports for phones and laptops. Two units are already installed at the CSIR-CIMFR campus in Dhanbad and at Northern Coalfields Limited in Singrauli. The team behind the project says discussions for commercial production are underway, with an aim to price the device affordably for homes and high pollution areas. The technology is patented and intended for industrial zones, schools, airports, railway stations, and other public spaces where planting trees is not feasible. The system uses microalgae in water to absorb CO2 and release oxygen, and can run on solar or grid power. It requires no soil and minimal maintenance compared to conventional trees.
