Researchers at CSIR-CIMFR have developed India's first mobile Smart Algal Liquid Tree (SALT), a compact device that uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Designed for space constrained urban areas where planting trees is not possible, the unit runs on solar or grid power and includes sensors for air quality monitoring. It also provides shaded seating and charging ports, making it a dual purpose public amenity. The system has been installed at the CSIR-CIMFR campus in Dhanbad and at Northern Coalfields Limited in Singrauli. The team is working on commercial production and affordable pricing for homes and high pollution zones. While the concept is promising for localized air cleaning, the actual CO2 removal rate and cost per unit are not yet disclosed, which will determine whether this scales beyond a pilot.
