Researchers at CSIR-CIMFR in Dhanbad have developed India's first mobile Smart Algal Liquid Tree (SALT), a compact air purification system that uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The unit is designed for space constrained urban areas where planting conventional trees is difficult. It runs on solar or grid electricity, includes sensors for air quality monitoring, and provides shaded seating with charging ports for phones and laptops. The system has been installed at the CIMFR campus in Dhanbad and at Northern Coalfields Limited in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh. The device can operate around the clock using natural or artificial light and also helps reduce dust. CSIR-CIMFR is in discussions for commercial production and aims to price it affordably for homes and high pollution areas. The technology is patented and intended for industrial zones, schools, transit hubs, and other public spaces.
