India's First Hydrogen Train Launches on Jind-Sonipat Route: A Real-World Test for Green Rail

The project is part of Indian Railways' broader Hydrogen for Heritage initiative and its goal to become a net-zero carbon emitter by 2030. However, the long-term viability of hydrogen rail depends on how the hydrogen is produced. If it comes from renewable-powered electrolysis, lifecycle emissions can be low. If it comes from fossil fuels, the climate benefits shrink. The pilot will test reliability, hydrogen consumption, and infrastructure costs under real Indian operating conditions. Economics will determine whether hydrogen trains expand beyond this pilot. Hydrogen requires electricity to produce, storage and refueling infrastructure, and fuel cells to convert energy back into power. These added steps make it more expensive than direct electric traction. The Jind-Sonipat service is an important real-world test, but its success will be measured by operational data, not the launch ceremony.
