India has launched its first hydrogen-powered train, a move that swaps diesel and overhead electric wires for onboard fuel cells. The train uses hydrogen and oxygen to generate electricity, with water as the only direct emission. It is designed for routes that are not electrified, offering a cleaner alternative to diesel locomotives on those lines. The train is part of Indian Railways' 'Hydrogen for Heritage' initiative, which aims to retrofit existing diesel locomotives with hydrogen fuel cell technology. The project targets emission reductions on heritage and scenic routes where full electrification is not practical. While the technology eliminates tailpipe CO2 and particulates, the full carbon benefit depends on how the hydrogen is produced. Green hydrogen from electrolysis using renewable energy would make the train near-zero emission across the full fuel cycle. For the carbon and climate community, this project is a real world test of hydrogen in heavy transport. The key questions are the cost of green hydrogen supply, the efficiency of the fuel cell system compared to direct electrification, and whether the maintenance and refueling infrastructure can scale. If successful, it could open a path for hydrogen in rail segments where batteries or catenary wires are not viable.
