India's first hydrogen train flagged from Jind, Haryana: how it works and what it means for rail decarbonization

India launched its first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026, from Jind, Haryana, running on the 89 km Jind-Sonipat route. The train uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity onboard, with water vapor as the only emission. It has two power cars and eight coaches, producing 2,400 kW and running up to 75 kmph. The project is part of Indian Railways' plan to cut carbon emissions on routes where full electrification is not practical. It aligns with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission. If the pilot succeeds, hydrogen trains could scale across the network, reducing diesel use and fossil fuel dependence in rail transport.
