India's first hydrogen fuel cell train, developed indigenously by Indian Railways, has completed over 1,200 km of successful trial runs between Jind and Sonipat. The train uses a 2,400 kW hydrogen propulsion system with onboard electricity generation, emitting only water vapour. The trial saved approximately 3,200 litres of diesel, demonstrating a real-world reduction in fossil fuel use for rail transport. The train is powered by green hydrogen stored at up to 500 bar, with a total storage capacity of about 3,000 kg. It includes lithium iron phosphate batteries for power support and multiple safety systems for leak detection and automatic shut-off. The Indian government retains full intellectual property rights for the technology and plans to begin trials on the Delhi route soon, with potential future exports.
