India's first indigenous hydrogen train has completed a successful 1,200 km journey between Jind and Sonipat, saving over 3,200 litres of diesel. The 10-coach train generates electricity onboard through a hydrogen-oxygen reaction, emitting only water vapor with zero tailpipe carbon emissions. It is powered by two hydrogen fuel cell driving cars delivering 2,400 kW total power, supported by lithium iron phosphate batteries and hydrogen cylinders storing green hydrogen at up to 500 bar. The Indian Railways developed the propulsion system indigenously and retained the intellectual property rights, positioning the technology for future exports. The train includes multiple safety systems for leak detection, heat, flames, and smoke. Trials on the Delhi route are expected to begin soon. This project establishes a domestic hydrogen rail ecosystem and supports India's commitment to zero-emission rail mobility.
