India has commissioned its first and deepest geothermal wells in Puga Valley, Ladakh, at an altitude over 14,000 feet. The two 1,000-meter-deep wells, developed by ONGC Energy Centre, are part of a 1 MW pilot geothermal power plant. This project supports the goal of a carbon-neutral Ladakh and marks a step forward for geothermal energy in India. The wells recorded a maximum temperature of 135 degrees Celsius at 400 meters depth, with further testing underway. The project faced delays due to an expired MoU but was revived after renewal. It is considered a blueprint for India's net-zero journey and could lead to commercial geothermal development in the region.
