The Ladakh administration has extended its agreement with ONGC to develop India's first geothermal power plant in the Puga valley. Located at an altitude of 14,000 feet, the project will start with a 1 MW pilot plant to test the commercial viability of harnessing underground heat for electricity. ONGC plans to deepen existing wells to 1,000 meters to tap into subsurface temperatures exceeding 240 degrees Celsius. This initiative aims to reduce Ladakh's reliance on conventional fuels and integrate geothermal energy into the region's broader renewable energy strategy.
