India's First Carbon Fibre Demonstration Plant Set Up at PM MITRA Park, Amravati via BTRA-MIDC MoU
pib.gov.inThe Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) have signed an MoU to build India's first 120 tonnes per annum carbon fibre technology demonstration plant at the PM MITRA Park in Amravati. The facility will include a research and development centre, testing lab, scale-up facility, and training centre. It aims to bridge the gap between lab research and commercial production of carbon fibre, which is used in aerospace, defence, automotive, renewable energy, hydrogen storage, and other sectors. This project supports India's goal of reducing import dependence and strengthening domestic manufacturing of advanced materials. By focusing on indigenous carbon fibre technology, it could lower costs for wind turbine blades, lightweight vehicles, and hydrogen storage tanks. The plant is aligned with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. While the announcement is a positive step, the timeline for actual production and the technology source remain unspecified.
