India's E20 petrol cuts carbon emissions by 30% with no engine damage, government tells Parliament
bizzbuzz.newsThe Indian government has informed Parliament that E20 petrol, which contains 20% ethanol, delivers roughly 30% lower carbon emissions compared to standard E10 fuel. In a written reply, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that E20 provides better acceleration, improved ride quality, and near-zero particulate matter emissions, contributing to cleaner urban air. The government cited extensive trials by ARAI, SIAM, and Indian Oil Corporation that found no evidence of ethanol-induced corrosion or engine damage in millions of legacy vehicles. Field data from a leading automaker covering 2.84 crore vehicles serviced in FY2025-26, including about 1.5 crore not originally certified for E20, showed no abnormal wear or component failure. A two-wheeler manufacturer and another OEM tracking 1.4 crore E20-operated vehicles reported similar results. The rollout of E20 is a key part of India's strategy to increase ethanol blending, reduce fossil fuel imports, and lower transport sector emissions, though questions remain about feedstock sustainability and fuel economy trade-offs.
