India's E20 ethanol petrol reduces fuel economy by 2-6% but cuts carbon emissions 30%, says Nitin Gadkari
dailyexcelsior.comIndia's Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed in Parliament that E20 petrol, which blends 20% ethanol with gasoline, can lower fuel economy by 2 to 6% depending on vehicle type and age. The statement came in response to concerns from opposition parties and consumer groups about vehicle compatibility and higher maintenance costs. Gadkari noted that engine durability tests showed no failures from E20, and that automakers continue to honor warranties for vehicles using the blend. The government says the rollout follows a phased, science-based process involving NITI Aayog, automakers, and research institutes. On the emissions side, E20 fuel delivers roughly 30% lower carbon emissions compared to E10, along with better acceleration and ride quality. India's ethanol blending program started with a pilot in 2001, introduced E5 in 2006, and has gradually increased blending rates after building production capacity and infrastructure. More than 20 crore two-wheelers and 3 crore petrol cars already operate on E15 or higher blends without widespread engine failures. The policy is part of India's broader strategy to reduce oil imports and cut transport sector emissions, though the fuel economy trade-off remains a point of debate for older vehicles.
