Indian industry leaders have confirmed that E20 petrol, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% gasoline, is safe for all vehicles including older models. Speaking at a press conference, executives from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Kirloskar said extensive testing showed no significant issues with wear, corrosion, or engine component lifespan. The fuel is part of India's plan to reach a 20% ethanol blending target by 2030, aiming to cut crude oil imports and reduce transport emissions. Ethanol is produced from plant-based feedstock and is described as a zero-carbon fuel that can also create new income for farmers. The rollout follows a phased introduction after testing on two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Industry leaders stressed that the scientific methodology behind the E20 standard is sound and that oil marketing companies follow prescribed quality standards. The push for ethanol blending is part of a broader strategy to improve energy security and lower the carbon intensity of India's transport sector.
