Industry experts and automakers in India have defended the country's E20 ethanol blending program, stating it was implemented through phased scientific testing and is safe for both new and older vehicles. The program reached 20 percent ethanol blending in petrol by December 2025, five years ahead of schedule, and has helped reduce crude oil imports and support farmer incomes. Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Maruti Suzuki representatives said extensive testing by ARAI and SIAM confirmed no significant damage to vehicles, with only a 2-4 percent mileage reduction reported. The ethanol blending initiative has saved an estimated 1.9 trillion rupees, with 160,000 crore rupees going directly to farmers. Industry experts emphasized that E20 is now the standard fuel in India, compatible with all vehicles sold after April 2023, and that older vehicles have also been tested without major issues. The program is part of India's broader strategy to cut crude imports, support agricultural surplus, and reduce transport emissions through a domestically produced, plant-based fuel.

The 2-4 percent mileage drop they admit to is not insignificant for fleet operators. That adds up fast. Also, calling ethanol zero carbon because plants absorb CO2 ignores the emissions from farming, transport, and processing. Still better than fossil fuels but not zero.

Worth noting that ethanol from sugarcane and foodgrains competes with food production and land use. The carbon neutrality claim only holds if you ignore land use change and fertilizer inputs. Still, the program moved fast and that is rare in climate policy.
