India released its draft National Steel Policy Vision 2047, aiming to raise crude steel capacity from roughly 220 million tonnes today to 604 million tonnes by 2047. The plan also targets finished steel consumption of 505 million tonnes and per-capita consumption of 302 kg, driven by infrastructure and manufacturing growth. The policy includes a 39% cut in carbon emission intensity, from about 2.54 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel to 1.54 tonnes by 2047. To get there, the draft calls for cleaner production technologies, higher scrap use, digitalisation, and more specialty steel. It also projects coking coal demand at 236 million tonnes, which means raw material security and imports will stay central. The draft is open for public consultation until October 30, 2026. If adopted, it would reshape India's steel sector and its emissions profile over the next two decades.
