India is increasing investment in coal gasification to reduce its heavy reliance on imported coking coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG). By converting domestic coal into syngas, the country aims to secure raw materials for its rapidly growing steel industry and produce essential chemicals like ammonia and methanol. However, this strategy creates a conflict with climate goals. Syngas-based steel production is more carbon-intensive than traditional methods, raising concerns about India's ability to lower the emission intensity of its industrial sector while prioritizing energy independence.
